Week 10 — What is a Paradigm? The Hidden Lens Shaping Your Reality
Have you ever noticed how two people can experience the same situation very differently? One sees opportunity where the other sees an obstacle. One feels empowered while the other feels trapped.
Often, it’s not the circumstances that differ — it’s their paradigms.
In my book Your Thoughts Matter, I explain that a paradigm is a mental framework or lens through which you interpret your experiences. Paradigms are made up of your beliefs, assumptions, habits, and patterns of thought. They shape how you respond to challenges, make decisions, and perceive opportunities.
As Mary Morrissey insightfully observed:
*“A paradigm is a collection of thought patterns that produce habits that produce results that may or may not be in harmony with what you would really love.” *
The Autopilot Within
Many paradigms are formed early in life and operate automatically, like a pair of glasses you rarely take off. You forget you’re even wearing them — you simply see the world through their tint.
We are all creatures of habit. Because paradigms control our behaviour, which determines our actions and results, we tend to do the things we do habitually on autopilot. We repeat the same patterns, expecting different results, without realising that we have the capacity to repattern our thoughts.
It’s like brushing your teeth with your non-dominant hand or driving to the office using a completely different route. At first, it feels awkward and requires conscious effort. But with repetition, it becomes natural.
The same is true for your paradigms.
While some paradigms support your growth, others may limit your potential without you even realising it. Understanding your paradigms is crucial because they influence everything you think, feel, and do.
“So if we truly want different results in our lives, we must begin by transforming the paradigm that is shaping our thoughts.”
Your Practice: The Paradigm Discovery
This week, try this simple Paradigm Discovery exercise:
- Reflect on a recurring situation where you feel stuck, frustrated, or dissatisfied.
- Ask yourself: “What belief or assumption is shaping my response here?”
- Identify whether this paradigm serves you or holds you back. Does it align with the person you want to become?
The Path to Paradigm Shift
By becoming aware of your paradigms, you can begin to challenge those that no longer serve you and adopt new frameworks that empower you.
Here’s an important truth: a paradigm doesn’t change by itself. It requires intentional, repeated effort. We need to repeatedly impress our positive and empowering thoughts upon our subconscious minds if we are to experience a genuine paradigm shift and change our destiny.
As Bob Proctor succinctly stated:
*“Change your paradigms, and you will change the way you create results.” *
Shifting your paradigm doesn’t happen overnight. But even small changes in perspective, consistently applied, can create profound transformations in your life.
