Week 13 — Attitudes: How Your Mental Posture Shapes Your Reality
Have you ever noticed how some people seem to approach life with ease, while others struggle even in similar circumstances? Much of this comes down to attitude—the lens through which we view every experience.
As James Allen profoundly observed:
*“The greatest discovery of my generation is that people can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind.” *
What a liberating truth. Your attitude either opens doors or erects barriers on your journey to personal and professional success.
What Is Attitude, Really?
In my book Your Thoughts Matter, I explain that attitudes are more than fleeting feelings. They are consistent patterns of thought and perspective that shape your experiences.
A positive attitude allows you to see opportunities where others see obstacles. A growth-oriented attitude encourages learning, resilience, and progress—even in the face of challenges.
My mentor, Mary Morrissey, offers this empowering reminder:
*“We don’t get to choose everything that happens in our lives. But we always get to choose our attitude toward it and what we do with it.” *
Whether you see the glass as half empty or half full depends largely on the attitude you bring to the question.
How Attitudes Shape Your Reality
Your attitudes influence your thoughts, your actions, and ultimately the outcomes you attract.
Consider these examples:
- An attitude of gratitude shifts your focus from scarcity to abundance.
- An attitude of personal growth turns setbacks into valuable lessons.
- An attitude of worthiness and deservingness empowers you to fully receive opportunities and blessings.
And for those moments when life feels overwhelming, I love this powerful reminder from Les Brown:
*“It’s not over until you win!” *
This is about adopting an undefeatable mental attitude—the determination to live up to your full potential, no matter what.
Your Practice: The Attitude Shift with 3 Steps:
Here’s a simple practice you can try today:
Step 1: Identify – Identify one area in your life where your attitude may be holding you back.
Step 2: Ask – Ask yourself: “What perspective can I adopt that empowers rather than limits me?”
Step 3: Choose – Choose one positive attitude and consciously apply it throughout your day. For example:
- “I embrace challenges as opportunities to grow.”
- “I am worthy of success and happiness.”
The Ripple Effect of Attitude
By cultivating empowering attitudes, you transform your inner world—which directly influences your outer reality.
Small shifts in attitude create ripple effects. They improve your relationships, enhance your work, and deepen your personal fulfilment.
As Zig Ziglar famously declared:
*“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” *
And Jim Rohn reinforces this timeless truth:
*“Having the right attitude is one of the basics that success requires.” *
