Week 12 — Who Am I? The Most Important Question You’ll Ever Answer

Person looking into a mirror that reflects light instead of image, representing self-discovery and inner truth.

Have you ever paused to ask yourself, “Who am I really?”

Not the roles you play—parent, partner, or professional.
Not your age, your achievements, or your past.
Not what others expect or assume about you.

But the you beneath it all.

This week, we explore one of the most profound themes in creating a life you love: your true identity.

The Sacred Power of “I Am”

In my book Your Thoughts Matter, I explain that knowing who you are at your core is essential to living a fulfilling and intentional life. Your self-perception influences every thought, every decision, and every action you take.

My mentor, Mary Morrissey, beautifully illuminates this truth:

“Every one of us has been given a sacred name. That name is ‘I am’.”

What you place after those two simple words determines the trajectory of your life.

“I am constricted” or “I am free.”
“I am incapable” or “I am capable.”
“I am a failure” or “I am successful.”

Each declaration is a creative act. Your “I am” statements are not just descriptions—they are co-creations with the universe. They send out a vibrational signal that shapes your reality and transforms your thoughts into tangible things.

The Layers That Cloud Your True Self

Many people carry assumptions about themselves that were never theirs to begin with. These beliefs are shaped by:

  • Past experiences and old wounds
  • Other people’s opinions and judgments
  • Societal expectations and cultural conditioning

Over time, these layers accumulate, clouding your true identity and limiting your potential. Self-discovery is the sacred process of peeling back these layers to reveal the authentic self beneath.

Here’s an important truth to consider: when you focus on what you don’t want or don’t love, your focus expands—and the universe conspires to bring you more of what you don’t want. This is the Law of Attraction at work.

That’s why empowering your “I am” statements is so crucial. What you declare yourself to be, you attract.

As Howard Falco writes in his book, I Am: The Power of Discovering Who You Really Are:

“Who you believe yourself to be is the single biggest factor in how you look at your universe and experience everything within it.”

Your Practice: The Self-Discovery Reflection – with 3 steps

Here’s a simple practice you can try today to reconnect with your authentic self:

Step 1: FIND – Find a quiet moment. Sit comfortably, breathe deeply, and let go of distractions.

Step 2: FIND – Reflect on these questions:

  1. “What truly drives me—beyond obligation or expectation?”
  2. “What activities bring me genuine joy and make time disappear?”
  3. “What are my deepest values—the principles I won’t compromise?”
  4. “What impact do I want to create with my life?”

Step 3: WRITE – Write down your insights. Even a few sentences can provide remarkable clarity. Return to them often.

Living From Alignment

As you deepen your understanding of who you truly are, something beautiful happens.

You begin to make choices from a place of alignment rather than obligation or habit. You naturally act in ways consistent with your true self. Your confidence strengthens. Your sense of purpose sharpens.

How you define yourself ultimately determines who you become.

And here’s the liberating truth: you are not stuck with old definitions. At any moment, you can consciously choose new “I am” statements that reflect the person you are becoming.
