Have you ever wondered why two people can face the same challenge, yet one navigates it with clarity while the other feels overwhelmed? The difference often lies in understanding the mind’s inner workings.

Your mind is not a mysterious black box. It is a sophisticated, learnable system. In Your Thoughts Matter, I explain that it operates like powerful software, running in the background to shape every perception, decision, and result in your life.

This week, we step back to understand the system itself—the inner landscape you’ve been learning to navigate throughout this series.

The Mind-Body Connection: A Simple Model

To make this practical, I often share a simple, powerful model based on the late Dr. Thurman Fleet’s “Stickperson” concept. It visually maps the mind-body connection, illustrating how our conscious and subconscious thoughts trigger vibrations that ultimately generate the results we experience in our physical reality.

This model helps demystify a profound truth: lasting change requires engaging more than just your conscious willpower.

The Three Layers of Your Mind

Understanding this system means recognising its key layers:

1. The Conscious Mind
The processor of active, aware thought. It’s where you analyse, decide, and direct focused attention. It is also known as the “Thinking or Intellectual Mind.” Think of it as the captain of the ship.

2. The Subconscious Mind
The database and autopilot. It stores every memory, habit, and deeply held belief. It controls automatic functions and is the source of your instinctual reactions. This is the layer that truly drives most behaviour. It is also known as the “Emotional or Universal Mind.”

As the great psychologist and philosopher William James pointed out:

*“Your subconscious mind is one with infinite intelligence and boundless wisdom.” *

3. The Intuitive/Higher Mind
The creative and connective layer. This is where inspiration, insight, and a sense of higher purpose arise. Here’s an important distinction: Intuition is one of the six higher mental faculties residing in our conscious mind. It’s the bridge between your conscious awareness and that deeper wisdom.

The Power of Alignment

As Jack Canfield powerfully teaches:

*“Use the power of your conscious and subconscious mind to create a vibrational match for the abundance you desire and deserve.” *

This is the essence of aligned creation. When your conscious desires and your subconscious programs are working together, you create a powerful vibrational match for what you want. When they’re at odds, you experience internal friction and inconsistent results.

Your Practice: The Mind Layer Audit

Mastery begins with awareness. This week, try this simple Mind Layer Audit:

  1. Observe: Sit quietly for three minutes. Just watch your thoughts without judgment. Don’t try to change anything—simply observe, like clouds passing in the sky.
  2. Identify: Notice which thoughts feel automatic, habitual, or emotional (these are likely arising from your subconscious). Notice those that are deliberate and analytical (these are coming from your conscious mind).
  3. Inquire: Gently ask yourself, “Does this thought pattern support my growth and vision, or does it reflect an old, limiting program?”

From Awareness to Mastery

This practice isn’t about controlling every thought. It’s about recognising which layer of your mind is running the show in any given moment.

By becoming an observer, you create a small gap—a space between the stimulus and your reaction. And in that gap lies your power to choose.

The more you understand your mind’s landscape—its conscious commands, its subconscious programs, and its intuitive whispers—the more skilfully you can direct its incredible power. You move from being unconsciously led by old software to consciously authoring your experience.
